A while back, I got a symmetrical 100/100Mbps fiber optic connection to my home. Since I already had a NAS box running 24/7, I went ahead and spent about an hour setting up bitcoind, with the appropriate port open. I also started seeding the blockchain Torrent.
The Satoshi client is currently connected to over 100 peers, and so far, I've served up over 2 TB worth of the blockchain, between the Satoshi client and the BitTorrent client! (no complaints from the ISP so far ...)
The only real cost to me was a bit of time invested in the setup, and about 15% consumption of the RAM and CPU of the NAS. In exchange, I get a warm fuzzy knowing that I'm doing a little bit to help out the network. :)
EDIT - For those who are curious, the NAS is actually an HP Proliant Microserver N40L, running Ubuntu 14.04 and ZFSonLinux, upgraded to 16GB of RAM to better handle the 15TB RAID-Z ZFS stuff.
Also, a sincere thanks to those who've already tipped! For anyone else considering tipping, though, please feel free to save your bits for a more worthy post or comment. (as for the tips I've already collected, I'll be sure to pass them on!)
